It's pretty difficult being Flemish these days without people assuming you don't like the Walloons. Sure, I don't like the unilingual French speaking inhabitants of the officially bilingual Brussels Capital District. But they are not Walloons. I don't know the Walloons, so how could I not like them?
It's also pretty difficult being Flemish these days without people assuming you want to separate from the French speaking south of the country. Sure, I don't believe in Belgium as it is today. But who does anyways? The Walloons, according to news articles. So why don't I get to know these people? Why don't I get to appreciate them more?
Maybe it's time for me to go venture out across the border. See if Flanders and Wallonia have things in common and can remain a country. I already have a name for it: Flallonia!
